Does anyone remember this quilt? Waayyy back in 2014 I hosted a Drunkard's Path quilt along on my old blog. That blog has since been deleted so I can't link back to it. I made at least 3 DP quilt tops that year and this was one of them and my absolute favorite. You might remember this version that I made with the leftovers from the big quilt. I quilted it up for a veteran's quilt last summer. Now it's time to do the big one. I quilted the little one easy. Of course I can't do the big one easy! Here's the underside. You can see that this quilt gradates diagonally light to dark just like the leftover version. But this one is pieced in circles. I knew from the moment that I conceived this quilt that I wanted to quilt Spirograph motifs in the circles. I want each one to be different. Have I lost my marbles? I don't think so, at least not yet. I'm very excited to get started. Next I needed to pick the thread color. Because there's so much going on in the fabric I've decided to use the same color thread in every circle. First I thought about gold and picked the thread on the left. Then I was going through my shiny poly threads again and found the peach on the right and I like it much better. I'm a little concerned that it might now show up as well in the pale blocks but this is the best of all of my thread options and I'm not buying more thread! I'll use something blending for the background I think but that's for much later. I'll do the SID around the edge of the circles when I do the background quilting. Hopefully that will work out OK. Here's the backing. It's a spiral pattern that I dyed last year sometime. It took forever to bast the quilt because I wanted it centered on the backing. My thought with this backing was to have the Spirograph motifs look like stars in a galaxy. Picking the bobbin thread for the background fills will be a challenge. Maybe I really have lost my marbles and maybe that's what I'll name this quilt. Be prepared, you will see a LOT of this one as I quilt it. Donaleen Kohn wanted to break up the vast amount of white/gray of her fireplace and decided on a fireplace screen. Her husband made a perfect frame for her from oak using his original design. He attached small dowels at the top and bottom that she used as "curtain rods". She filled it with 2.5" torn strips of Abundance Gradient. She quilted "straight lines", layering the fabric with Quilter's Dream Select and then hand sewed the strips onto the dowels.
It really brightens up the marble, doesn't it? If you have made anything with my hand dyed fabric I hope you will consider sharing it in the Customer Gallery. In appreciation you will receive a 20% shop coupon that's good for 3 months! Thanks to some good football this weekend I got 2 blossoms on my 3rd border done to get me officially to 50% complete! And then I did one more so I'm officially at 52%.
I may not be posting again until Saturday. Mom is here this week and we are spending our time house/apartment shopping for her instead of having fun making things. She'll be moving to Richmond in late Spring and it will be nice to have her closer. Getting to that point, however, is a painful process for both of us. We would rather be reading or sewing. The fabric if the week is Daybreak Gradient. If you want some for your stash get it before it sells out. Through Sunday (or while supplies last) this fabric is 25% off or $6.75/half yard. New Stars!Stars are one-yard pieces of one-of-a-kind hand dyed fabric and there are 5 beautiful new ones in the shop this week. That makes over 25 to choose from. These are great for backgrounds for art quilts or for times when you want something even more textured than the Shades Packs. Here are the new ones.
Time to wrap up and plan ahead. I ended December with a couple more finishes. I quilted several veterans quilts and the one above was my last one. That quilt is still on the frame because I'm filling the edge with trees for next year's postcards. This quilt brought my total for the year to 39 against a goal of 40. I did include all of the quilts that were quilted on FloMo, even those by Marcy and Tina. There are 4 more that were quilted by Tina on her machine. Since I only have one top left in the closet to quilt I'm really happy that we are pretty much caught up. I also finished Parasol this month. I was determined not to finish the year with this one hanging over my head. I do still need to do a label but we're calling it done! Here are my stats for the year: Starting UFO 19 Finished YTD 17 (Goal 11) Started YTD 13 (Planned 6) Ending UFO 15 (Goal 14) Veterans YTD 39 (Goal 40) It's interesting to compare these stats to 2016: Starting UFO 24 Finished YTD 7 (Goal 14) Started YTD 3 (Planned 6) Ending UFO 20 (Goal 15) Veterans YTD 40 (Goal 40) I started and finished 10 more projects in 2018 than 2017 and I'm down to 15 UFO projects. I think that's the least ever since I started quilting! For 2018 I have the following UFO projects: Actively In Process Vintage Flower appliqué (blocks and inner border done, need to put together the rest of the top and applique outer borders) Maine sunprinted quilt Second mosaic wall section - beaded curtain Mosaic backsplash Ready to be quilted (have backs) Baby Drunkard’s Path Brown Drunkard’s Path Kaleidoscope Block of the Week (Jackie's Choice) Postage Stamp Quilt (the oldest UFO) Tops/Projects In Some State of Progress Shibori dyeing series (need to decide if I'm doing anything with them) Flower appliqué on green wall hanging (need setting plan) Blue vintage flower applique (after the big vintage flower applique) Dark red screen printed fabric (in gold) for placemats Coming Home sun prints for wall hanging Red leaf prints for wall hanging Blue scrappy tumbler quilt The next project to come off the long-term list will be this one. These are blocks that I hand appliqued and they were inspired by a project that Deb levy made using Go! Cutter shapes. I used this project to learn how to hand applique. I don't really have a use for these blocks so I'll either make them into 12 placemats or a small donation quilt. This will be the next project that I work on while I spend most of my time with FloMo catching up on some of the tops. The list of projects that I want to do remains the same as last year:
