This week's inspiration is another inspiring art quilt from Patricia Caldwell. The coastal influence of her new home in Oregon is really showing through. She use the Waves gradient as the jumping off point for her trademark stitching and embellishment. In this close up photo you can see some the the wonderful details that she's added to the quilt that include fibers, dyed yarns, Larimar and Chrysocolla crystal beads. She's also included driftwood pieces and polished jasper and small pieces of agate found on the beaches at the Oregon coast.

The only rule is that projects have to be complete. It doesn't have to be made totally from hand dyed fabric, just include a recognizable amount. Today's inspiration comes from Heidi Kapszukiewicz. Here's Heidi's description of her challenge quilt: This is a guild challenge where we used our birthstone color for a quilted piece. I chose Vicki's blue fabric to be the basis for my aquamarine birthstone. I saw many flower and leaf images in the fabrics and I wanted to try thread stitching. So I used various variegated threads to bring out the shapes. I also wanted to have a natural border of leaves at the bottom. These were added later. This is all Vicki's fabric except the tummy of my tree swallow who decided to visit us with its mate. I added star shaped beads to complete the sky. I won "members' choice" at my guild and this was displayed at our quilt show with other entries. For sharing, Heidi received a 20% coupon for the shop that's good for 3 months! This week's inspiration comes to us from Linda Webster. She used the Pueblo Gradient and the Cranberry Shades Pack along with other hand dyed and batik fabrics. Her techniques included raw edge applique and machine quilting. For sharing, Linda received a 20% coupon for the shop that's good for 3 months! Today's inspiration is a challenge quilt made by Andrea Luliak suing the South Pacific gradient.
From Andrea: "This was a challenge from my FL art quilt group, the Dirty Dozen. We had to paint an ugly watercolor painting and pick a section for inspiration. The ugly painting was the hardest part of the challenge, and I'm pleased with the use of the gradient! I added a small bit of yellow, as the gradient piece could not completely cover the area. It will be exhibited at Quilts and Lace in Florida." For sharing, Andrea received a 20% coupon for the shop that's good for 3 months! The design is based on a photograph of the mountain where the groom proposed. Helen used a combination of gradients (Blue Sky and Forest Canopy), Stash Packs, Shades Packs and Stars in her composition. For the top of the canopy she had me dye yardage of the lightest side of the Blue Sky gradient . Here's a photo of the happy couple the day that they first saw the chuppah. They were thrilled!

This week's inspiration comes to us from patricia Caldwell. She used 3 different Stash Packs (purple, dark blues and blacks) with a Galaxy. She embellished with crystals and fibers added along with angelina fibers. She used two left over pieces of dyed fabric for the two smaller planets.

She created this portrait of her Dad using the face portrait technique taught by Phyllis Cullen and Cindy Richard (co-authors of It’s All about the Face) to make this fabric portrait of her Dad. Except for the shirt (made with fabric from one of Dad’s actual shirts) all of the fabric was from the Sepia shades pack. It was based on the included photo. It's a wonderful likeness! She has sent us another of her beautiful applique quilts. She mostly used the gradients Sugar Maple, Woodlands, Jenny Lake, Sunshine and Shadows, Navaho for elements of the quilt and added other fabrics for the flowers and squiggles.
Here's her message about the creation of this quilt: "I designed, sewed, and quilted this piece, again using techniques I learned a few years ago in a Jane Sasssaman workshop, "Abstracting from Nature". The thin stems were fused in place but every other element (each petal, leaf, etc.) was straight-stitched in place and then machine-appliqued with a zigzag stitch. After zigzagging, I added the quilt backing. Each element was then outlined in Sew Sassy 12 weight thread, which became part of the quilting, as did the details on the leaves. I added "floaters" (single units of a decorative stitch) to complete the quilting." For sharing, Irma received a 20% coupon for the shop that's good for 3 months! He has been working on a series of mosaic faces and is sharing 3 of them with us today. You can follow his series on his blog. These are done using fusible applique and are enhanced with paint as needed. Each is layered and quilted before being mounted on an artist canvas for hanging.
