I didn't even finish the block. I knew at this point that I wouldn't like it at all. It just will not work with these fabrics. Also, while I absolutely love Elizabeth Hartman patterns, I don't love this one. It's not nearly as much fun as Penguin Party, Puppy or Fab Farm. I'll just have to peruse the patterns for another idea. Aside from a few wasted hours on this block, I added a couple of rows to the crochet poncho and I did my 6th truckload of mulch. Because I don't have anything else to share, here are a few photos of my mulching project. I started at the road and am working toward the house. It will look really pretty when the weeds turn green again. This is the bed I finished yesterday. It took a truckload and a half. You can't really see it here, but there are daffodils coming up on both sides of this bed and there are lots of irises in the back. This year we might plant some things under the holly to try to fill this in some. I started in this bed yesterday and will add another load today. It will take two loads to finish. Here's where we planted the hydrangeas, rhododendrons, and Lenten Roses last fall after we cut the lower 6 feet of branches off the cedar tree on the left. After this I have a magnolia tree that you can see in the distance, a single sycamore tree and then I can do around the buildings. I'm just a little over halfway done.
I case you are wondering, I do actually enjoy doing this. I put on my headphones and listen to a book while I get some very good exercise. It takes me about 2 hours to unload and spread one full load of mulch. One truckload (2 scoops) costs about $60. I'll try to get another done today but there's going to be a lot going on with the house project wrapping up. It's also quilt club meeting tonight and I need to get 3 bags of veterans quilts ready for delivery.

You are right, those fabrics aren't working in the butterfly block. It too busy, even for me, who loves busy quilts.

Too bad the butterfly block did not work out. I am glad to see you don't pile the mulch up the base of the trees. I see people do that around here and it suffocates the trees. I need to get you some Lenten Roses! It looks like the weather is going to be pretty decent here for the next few days so I need to get to it!

I don't think you wasted your time attempting that flutter-bye because at least now you know. I wonder if you could use some of your hand dyes and combine them with just a bit of the patterned fabric. Perhaps the tips of the wings in the pattern?

Good for you, you have to be brave to pull the plug. I gave my friend a kaleidoscope quilt that she said she would finish as I loathed it when it went on the wall. When you are mulching, be sure to leave the flare of the tree trunk against the ground showing as the mulch causes moisture rot and insect attack if it is mounded up against the trunk. I made that mistake more than once, and now I am vigilant about it.

Oh, I agree, much too busy. It needed to be a focal point with lower tones around. But it sounds like you didn't like piecing the block either. Kudos for recognizing that and being able to just stop.
