Red Sunset Quilt
85 x 90
The guest room quilt is finally done! It took entirely too long but you know how projects pass each other in the priority lanes. This quilt (and the headboard and bed frame) is made with one of my favorite gradients, Red Sunset. It is one of the first gradients I ever created and still one of the most popular. The center of this quilt is nothing but 5" squares with wonky corners added. I assembled it from the center out. The idea came from a book but I can't remember exactly which book it's from and I think I gave it away when I finished the top.
The top border is wider than the other 3 sides and the finished quilt is about 85" x 90".

After I quilted the quilt I washed and dried it before I trimmed it because I wanted it to be exactly the right size to be able to tuck into the side of the frame. It worked out perfect and washing it before binding it didn't cause me any problems at all.
I quilted it with an overall spikey pattern. I had to do that because the quilt is two-sided. While I did get the front and back centered there was no good way to do a quilting design that would work with both sides. I think this spikey meander makes some great texture.
The other side is a giant tie dyed mandala. I think this will be the summer side for the quilt. I love how it looks with the headboard.
You can see here how I trimmed the size of the quilt so I don't actually have to tuck it inside the frame. It looks good hanging like this.
One thing I did different on this quilt is that I trimmed the bottom corners curved. I didn't want a big wad of quilt to have to tuck under the mattress and curving the corner worked out really well. The top edge is cut square like a "normal" quilt.
But the star of the summer side is the giant mandala. I love it. I'm not great at tying and dyeing the mandalas but I get a little better each time.
