Two more applique blossoms means that the 3rd border is half done and I'm 57% done with the border applique. More playoff games this weekend means I should get more blossoms done. I've also been working a little on a new batch of postcards and doing some testing of thread colors for the "Lost My Marbles" quilt. I'll share both of those over the next couple of days. For the second time since we moved here almost 20 years ago, our pond froze solid over the last 2 weeks. It was thick enough to walk on. After the snow we saw fox tracks across the pond. It should be totally melted by tomorrow. These two photos are of the river behind our house, the South Anna River. I took them from the bridge as I was taking Mom home the day after it snowed. I've never seen this much ice/snow cover on the river before.
I'm glad we've had the wood stove to help supplement the heat for the house. Thanks to some good football this weekend I got 2 blossoms on my 3rd border done to get me officially to 50% complete! And then I did one more so I'm officially at 52%.
I may not be posting again until Saturday. Mom is here this week and we are spending our time house/apartment shopping for her instead of having fun making things. She'll be moving to Richmond in late Spring and it will be nice to have her closer. Getting to that point, however, is a painful process for both of us. We would rather be reading or sewing. With the ornament kits finally done I can now get back to my applique and I got 2 more blossoms done this weekend. With those 2 done I now have 2 borders done! I'm 45% done. With 2 borders done you would think I'd be half done but I will have the 4 corners left to add after I sew the borders to the quilt. So 45% it is. I even got a few stitches in the 3rd border during the Cowboys/Raiders game last night.
Very happy. In between plugging along on the ornament I'm also plugging along on the applique. My last update was a couple of weeks ago and I've surprised myself with the progress I've made since then. I'm on the second border and each has 10 blossoms. I start in the middle. After the last update I finished the last blossom on one side. Then back to the center to start the other side with this red one. Then two more! Only 2 more left to do on this border.
There are 10 on each border and one larger blossom for each corner once I sew the borders on the quilt. I've finished 18 so I'm 40% done! I think it's been over a month since I stitched on this but football season started this past weekend and that's my excuse to sit and stitch for hours. The are the 2 most recent blossoms completed. I start in the middle and work my way to each end. I only have one more blossom to do on this half and then I'll start back on the other side. I've completed 15 of 44 blossoms so my borders are 34% complete. That actually sounds pretty impressive.
I'm just checking in for a quick post today to share an applique update. I've gotten started on the second border. I like to start them in the center so I can get that center dot in place. I've got a special fondness for the center dot for some reason. But that's not the headline.
The headline is that I'm 27% done! I'm over 1/4 done with the borders! I think that if football season is good that I might get all 4 borders stitched before the Super Bowl. Tomorrow I finally have a finish to share! Thanks to some extra internet data from our ISP, Chris and I have been watching a bit of Netflix the past couple of months so I haven't had to wait for football season to make progress on the applique borders. Thanks to some Longmire episodes last week I finished the first border for my applique quilt! Each border has 10 blossoms and once the borders are done there will be 4 corner blossoms to do. Here are the last 2 blossoms. I'm now 22% done with the borders!
Here are a few more of the blossoms from this border. I have the second border out and ready to start on this week, hopefully. After I posted my UFO update yesterday I realized that I had not given an applique update in a while and I've actually made a bit of progress on this. We've been watching a few series on Amazon Prime so I've had a bit of hand sewing time. I started in the middle and am working my way to each end. I think the last update included the red blossom. The Gold and blue ones finished out half of the first border! After I finished that side I came back to the center, stitched the peach floral blossom and added the center dot. Now I have 6 of 44 blossoms of the border done and that means I'm 13.6% done. I've made it into double digits! It might be time for a celebration drink! I even have the vine for the next blossom done so I'm moving right along. This is how I fold up the border on each side of the blossom that I'm stitching. It helps to keep the long border under control. Don't look too closely at my stitching on the back. My only concern is that I don't have any loose ends showing under the white.
I'm getting so close to finishing the first border that I have some extra motivation....once I get over the cold that my dearest husband gave me. It's not football season so I'm not watching a lot of TV and that means that there's been precious little progress on the applique quilt so far this year. We also have metered internet so we can't stream much. But last week was the cycle date on our internet and because our internet was down for 10 days earlier we had lots of data to use up. So we started binge watching a series on Amazon Prime. I got 2 more blossoms done! I have 4 blossoms on the first border done. One more and I'll be half finished with the first border. That means that I am now 9% done with the borders.Maybe I'll be able to do more on some upcoming trips but real progress won't happen until football season starts again in September.
I didn't get my quilt basted last night because I was having too much fun sewing at my friend's house.I took my applique project and got one more blossom stitched so now my borders are 4.5% complete!
Today and tomorrow are sewing days with Country School quilters. I will get the leftover blocks Rainbow blocks sewn together for a top for a lap quilt. Maybe tonight I will get the quilt basted and I'll fire up the kiln again. |
