Innova Angles Quilt
42" x 45"
For a quilt that started as barely an idea this one sure wound up possessing me. Last Spring when I started the HSTeria Quilt Along I found this set of 6 fat eighths of hand dyed white-on-white fabrics. These are probably the first hand dyed fabrics I made mixing my own take on the color wheel. While I was cutting a lot of half square triangles I decided that it was also time to do something with these and pulled out the isosceles triangle die to use for the first time. The white fabrics are from a few of my husband's work shirts (he retired over 6 years ago). I convinced him that I needed white fabric so I could get him to downsize his closet just a little bit. He never made a connection to the 15 bolts of white fabric that I have in the basement.
The size of the quilt is based on the number of triangles that I could get from the 6 fat eighths. I sewed it together in an afternoon and didn't give it another thought. I had no plans for it.
Then I ordered my new Innova longarm and needed a practice quilt for my first quilt. I dyed a backing and was ready to go as soon as FloMo arrived. The first thing I wanted to do was ruler work and I did tons of it on this quilt.

I created several triangle "windows" on the quilt, pulled out all of my rulers and had a blast. I did curved cross hatching in every direction. I quilted triangle spirals. Little triangle shapes and big ones. Straight lines and wavy lines. After I finished the triangles I filled the background with swirls and pebbles.
For the backing I made a hand dyed spiral matching the colors from the front of the quilt. It's a good thing I matched the colors since the only thing I had for binding was left over backing fabric.
This quilt was such a joy to make. I didn't have an intended home for it but I did take it to Virginia Longarm to show it to them and they asked to have it for their showroom. It now resides in their SouthEast Showroom in Greenville, SC.

I am happy for them to have it and I created a Zentangle label for it. To make these labels I create the text in Powerpoint or Word and print that to paper. Then I draw the art around the text. Sometimes it takes a few iterations to get something I like. Once I'm happy with the label I print it to fabric that's been treated with Bubble Jet Set.
Isn't' it funny how some quilts start as whims but then eventually become one of your favorites? For me I think that happens when I don't have any preconceived ideas or expectations. I let myself go and don't think about it too much and I seem to get better results.
It also helps to have a machine that sews the most beautiful stitch ever with absolute perfect tension!
