Pleiades
36” square
Paula Nadelstern contacted me and asked for a second quilt for 2015. This one would be for her new book and it would be based on the principle of "simple shapes, complex fabrics". Well, I love a challenge so I jumped in and Pleiades was the result.

The piecing is so simple! Each block is made of 2 pieces, like a rail fence. The finished size of a block is 4.5" so each piece is cut 2 3/4 x 5. The fun part is fussy cutting the fabric to get 4 identical pieces and cutting the motifs in such a way as to get some movement with each pinwheel.

Making this one does require either a design wall or design chart to keep things in order. The background is a feathery print that helps the piecing lines disappear almost completely.

This and several other kaleidoscope quilts are included in Paula Nadelstern's book Fabracadabra that features using simple shapes with complex fabrics.
