Zig Zag Scraps Quilt
64 x 88
Sometime around 2005 or 2006 I pulled out a big bin of scraps, divided the fabrics into 4 color groups and proceeded to make about a million crumb blocks. I did one set in greens and golds, one in black, white and red, one in brights and a set in blues and tans. I planned out 4 quilts and bought all of the fabric to finish them. I finished the first on in 2006 with the bright blocks. I called it Mardi Gras . The rest of the projects have been aging ever since.
I am trying to finish some UFO projects and picked up the blue/tan crumb blocks next. They were a little stark so I decided to tone them down a bit first with a little coffee dyeing. The coffee dyeing helped considerably. I bought some navy blue Kona cotton (this was before I started dyeing fabric). I had the quilt quilted before Craft Week and only had to finish the binding.

he crumb blocks were set on point with blue corners. The rows of blocks were offset by 1/2 block to give the zig zag effect. When I first designed this quilt I envisioned feathers in the zig zag spaces. But once it came time for quilting I realized that this will probably be a man's quilt and feathers would be too feminine. I settled on a vine and leaf instead. It was also faster than feathers!
I quilted a motif in each block using a circle template. I was able to do the blocks continuous across the rows. I used King Tut thread on top and So Fine in the bobbin.
I had a few blocks left and didn't want to have to see them again for another project so I pieced them, with every gold/brown fabric I could find in my stash, for the back.
This quilt now belongs to my brother, Tim.
