Quilting Letters on a Quilt

My friend asked me to quilt a quilt for her nephew and she wanted his name quilted on it. I've never quilted letters, or any other image for that matter, on a quilt so I needed to develop an easy method.

I found a font that I liked in Word and printed the letters REALLY LARGE. I didn't want to waste a lot of black ink so I printed them in light gray and then traced around the letters with a black marker. Next I traced the letters onto tracing paper. I like to use Golden Threads paper.

I cut the paper letters apart and pinned them on the quilt. Arranging them wonky means that you don't have to worry about perfect placement or having to fix any errors.

To stitch, I outlined the letter once on the line, then I removed the paper and stitched over the letter 3 more times. I needed to stitch over it 4 times for the letter to show but multiple lines of stitching also hides stitching line wobbles.
It's a lot faster and easier than I expected and this will work for transferring any imagery to a quilt.
