Spinning Stars Quilt
Approximately 60" x 85"
I started this quilt as part of a quilt along on Amy's Creative Side. She called this Dancing Stars but, for some reason I unconsciously started calling it Spinning Stars and that name stuck. It's made with 6" finished blocks set on point. I started with a large quilt backing dyed in a gradient. I cut that into strips and assigned each strip to a row of blocks so that I maintained the gradient effect as I built the quilt. Aside for the white, all of the fabrics in this quilt are hand dyed fabrics.
This quilt was gifted to my niece last week as her high school graduation quilt. She'll take it with her to Longwood University in the fall.

The border of the quilt is quilted in Superior So Fine in white. The quilting int he blocks is quilted with Superior Rainbows in Wiakiki. The white thread worked great for the border because it shows really strongly in the dark areas but seems to fade is the feathers move up the quilt to the light areas at the top.
In the middle of the quilt I just squiggled and then did some ruler work in the blocks. The variegated thread was perfect because it has light, medium and dark blues. The thread shows equally all over the quilt.

This is a middle section (although the color isn't accurate at all in this photo) and you can get an idea of how the thread works in the middle values.
Here's the top of the quilt. The feathers really blend in but the squiggle quilting still shows up.

The back is also hand dyed. There's no label because I quilted the label into the quilt. I should have taken a photo of that part!

Here's what it looked like washed and dried. When she got to the beach I had it on her bed for her. She loved it and I'm glad because this is one of my all-time favorite quilts and my niece loved it.
