Redoubt Quilt Pattern
This quilt is based on a 4" grid and is great for fat eighths or fat quarters. The color blocks remind me of lanterns
Fabric required:
Background: 2 yards
Connecting squares (red): fat quarter
Lantern fabrics: about a fat eighth each for 15 lanterns

Piecing columns:
I found this one easiest to piece in columns, one row at a time. Every square is 4" finished and I used the Go! 4" half square triangle to cut the HST blocks but you can use whatever method works best for you. Cutting for all 3 columns: Background: cut 30 4.5" squares and 60 HST (cut 30 4 7/8" squares and then cut in half on the diagonal) Connecting squares: cut 15 4.5" squares (red) Lanterns: There are 5 in each column with one of them split between the top and bottom of the column, so cut 15 sets of 2 - 4.5" square and 4 HST (cut 2 4 7/8" squares and then cut in half on the diagonal) Sew a background square on each side of a connecting square (red) to make 15 connecting rows.
Sew every lantern HST to one background HST to make a 4.5" square.
Sew a lantern HST to each side of a lantern square to make a unit like this. Make 2 in each color/fabric. Sew these units into rows following the diagram at the left. There will be 4 complete lanterns, 5 connecting rows and half a lantern on each end. Sew 3 of these column units. |

Piecing:
Measure the length of your columns. It should be 60.5" but if not, that OK. Just use your measurement.
Cut 7 WOF background strips that are 3.5" wide. Piece these into 4 strips that are the length of your columns.
Sew the 4 background strips and block columns together alternating them and making sure there's a background strip in each edge.

I made this version using a wild hand dyed fabric for the background, orange for the connectors and a variety of hand dyed greens for the lanterns.

A very dark background with bright lanterns will give it a bit of a party atmosphere.

This version uses Shades of 2 fabrics for the lanterns and connector squares.
