Good news! You don't have to look at my border options again today. Instead I have more of the exquisite work of Patricia Caldwell, The Butterfly Quilter. All 3 of these are quilted Crystals fabrics and they are spectacular.
The first one is a 58" Sateen fabric. She quilted this one for her new living room and I don't blame her for not selling it! The next 2 are each about 35" square. To see more photos of them just click on the images to be taken to her Etsy shop. You must go see the details! Follow Patricia on Facebook to see her new adventures in Eco dyeing and the beautiful art quilts that she's making from them. The calendar says Tuesday but ti feel like Monday and I'm already behind. I didn't accomplish nearly as much as I planned this weekend. Mold season is here in full force and my allergies are a little crazy. When I'm taking 10+ Benedryl a day I move a little slower. No need to give me allergy advice, I've tried everything and I'm actually much better than I used to be. For over 10 years I took 16 Benedryl EVERY SINGLE DAY. I would/could have taken more but if I did it caused me heart problems. Now my average is 4 but during mold season I have to take more. It's just the way it is. I did play around with glass and have the kiln half loaded for the next firing. I washed a lot of sheets and towels because we had different Airbnb guests every day and in between I worked on the borders for Virginia's Vintage Creeper (sorry Gene). I'm anxious to get this settled so I can get the borders ready for hand work and can put the rest away for a while. Like everyone who commented I liked the middle one of this set best too. But I didn't like it enough to go with it. I needed to see how the border will look on the quilt. Remember, this is the inner border. This quilt is going to be huge at about 95" square. This border is actually pretty close to the one I started with in EQ. Meh. Maybe it's all the blossoms that I don't like. I absolutely want the vine so I tried this . I like this better but it's way too busy and leaves no space for quilting. This is a little less busy and I'm liking it better. Hmmmm, maybe. It does leave some room for quilting some feathers and I think this quilt absolutely needs feathers. Sorry for the photo quality. By the time I saw that it was blurry I had already take this down.
While I like this one best so far none of them are ringing my bell so expect to have to wade through more of these posts over the next days....or weeks. I need to come up with a name for this quilt soon because "Vintage Flowers" isn't interesting at all. Maybe Virginia's Vintage Creeper. Virginia because I bought the blocks at the Virginia Quilt Museum Vintage, well, that's obvious Creeper, because someone else's UFO crept onto my own UFO list and Virginia Creeper is a real plant, although not a flowering one. What do you think? Would that be a good name? Any other ideas? Regardless of the name, the project is front and center for me right now. It's taking a lot of work to get it far enough along that it can easily be a travel or TV project. Yesterday I hung out with my friend, Anne, and worked on preparing flower centers. While at her house I also experimented with a few layouts for the border. The top one is my original plan but I don't think I care for the 3-petal buds. I am leaning toward the middle one and definitely like the 5-petal buds better. Last night after I got home I started basting together some 5-petal sets.
This is going to be my mail project for the weekend. I'm going to give myself the Monday holiday with everyone else so I'll see you back here Tuesday. Back to the trip with Mom. As we travel from her house to Martinsville we go through South Boston, VA. The only time I ever go there is when I am going to Martinsville so I wanted to take a brief detour to see the 10 acre Bob Cage Sculpture Garden one more time. This is just another example of big gem in the middle of nowhere. Bob Cage was a famous tobacco auctioneer. In his free time he played tennis at a competitive level and did folk art sculpture. He passed 2 years ago and you can read a great article about him here. Following are some of the photos that I took and you can see more in this Flickr Gallery. If you are every in South Boston, VA, please go check this out. You can't wander among the sculptures but you can park on the road side and walk up and down the edge of the gardens. This one looks like a display of football pads and I'm pretty sure it's made from urinals! Dinosaurs in a sculpture garden are a must! Most of the sculptures are abstract like these 2. This is one of my favorites. This one, by far, is the creepiest. But then any kind of art with faces creeps me out. The bird is my favorite and notice how huge it is in comparison to the urinal sculpture from the first photo.
