This week's inspiration is provided by Irma Lubbe. She has sent us another of her beautiful applique quilts. She mostly used the gradients Sugar Maple, Woodlands, Jenny Lake, Sunshine and Shadows, Navaho for elements of the quilt and added other fabrics for the flowers and squiggles.
Here's her message about the creation of this quilt: "I designed, sewed, and quilted this piece, again using techniques I learned a few years ago in a Jane Sasssaman workshop, "Abstracting from Nature". The thin stems were fused in place but every other element (each petal, leaf, etc.) was straight-stitched in place and then machine-appliqued with a zigzag stitch. After zigzagging, I added the quilt backing. Each element was then outlined in Sew Sassy 12 weight thread, which became part of the quilting, as did the details on the leaves. I added "floaters" (single units of a decorative stitch) to complete the quilting." For sharing, Irma received a 20% coupon for the shop that's good for 3 months! If you have made anything with my hand dyed fabric I hope you will consider sharing it in the Customer Gallery. The only rule is that projects have to be complete. It doesn't have to be made totally from hand dyed fabric, just include a recognizable amount. Today's inspiration comes from Gene Black. He has been working on a series of mosaic faces and is sharing 3 of them with us today. You can follow his series on his blog. These are done using fusible applique and are enhanced with paint as needed. Each is layered and quilted before being mounted on an artist canvas for hanging. It was very exciting for me to find out that a Quilt Guild had used mostly my fabrics for their 2023 Opportunity Quilt!
I copied this information from their website but you should go there to see lots of detail photos: The 2023 Opportunity Quilt team of seven created flower blocks using raw edge machine embroidery applique. Each member took a sketch of their flower drawn by Valerie Sauban and went to task to create their applique piece as true to life as possible, sometimes creating and recreating their block to get the perfect color hue and shade and shape to depict each flower radiantly. Once assembled Jackie Seidell free-motion machine quilted the quilt. The quilt will be raffled off at our 2023 Quilt Show, Sunday, April 16th, at 3:30 pm. People can request tickets here https://www.gqcccquiltshow.org/2023-ticket-request/ Tickets are $1 for 1, $5 for 6 and $10 for 15. Need not be present to win. I posted this post a day early to give you a chance to get in a order for tickets if you are interested. For sharing, GQCCC will receive a 20% coupon for one of their special projects!
